ONLINE Judge Roundtable
This is a one-session live online Roundtable. The topic will includebest practices in judging port to port races.
Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm b>Eastern. (6:00 to 9:00 pm Central; 4:00 to 7:00 pm Pacific).
The facilitators are Nancy Glover and John Porter.
Judge Roundtables are intended only for certified judges and may be used in place of, or in addition to, traditional seminars by certified judges to gather Continuing Education points toward recertification. They may not be used for initial certification, which requires that the applicant attend a seminar.
There is no homework, and each session will focus on discussing current and interesting topics for judges. You should plan to have your copy of The Racing Rules of Sailing and the US Sailing Judges Manual with you.
Attendance is required and after successful completion each participant will earn 30 CEUs towards re-certification.
The Judge Continuing Education Events are free of charge for Certified Judges ONLY. A $25 administrative fee to US Sailing will be charged to uncertified members.

Session 2: Validity Webinar

Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 7:00-10:00 pm Eastern, (4:00-7:00 pm PT), 6:00 - 9:00 CT).
Completion of all coursework and attendance in all three sessions is required to complete and pass the course.
There will be advance work REQUIRED to complete before the first two sessions. There will be significant interactive learning situations during the seminar. There is approximately 1-2 hours of pre-course preparation required before Session 1, 7-8 hours of preparation before Session 2. This is the course for those interested in becoming a certified Club Judge. This seminar teaches the procedures and responsibilities of being a judge. Attendees should have a working knowledge of the RRS.
Approximately ten days prior to the first session the course will open in Canvas, US Sailing’s online learning platform. You will receive an email inviting you to participate in the course from Canvas Free for Teachers, [email protected]. Being a Club Judge is a fun and interesting way to give back to the sport of sailing. As a Judge, you will learn what happens in a protest room, how decisions are made, and over time you will gain a better understanding of the rules, making you both a better Judge and a better racer!
The US Sailing Club Judge Seminar is 8-10 hours of on-line interactive learning and a one-day in-person seminar. The Club Judge Seminar is NOT intended to serve as a rules seminar, you should have a basic understanding of the sailing rules.
The goals of the seminar are:
(1) to become a new judge at a local club and be able to serve on a protest committee;
(2) for existing members of a protest (or race) committee to sharpen their judging and procedural skills; and
(3) lay the groundwork to (potentially) pursue their US Sailing judging certification.
Preparation Period: Approximately two weeks prior to the in-person session the course will open in Canvas, US Sailing’s online learning platform. You will receive an email inviting you to participate in the course from Canvas Free for Teachers, [email protected]. Please click the "Get Started" link as soon as possible to complete your login profile in Canvas to begin the pre-course assignments. Expect to complete 6-8 hours of required pre-course work before the in-person seminar begins. All pre-course work MUST be completed in Canvas prior to in-person session in order to understand that portion of the seminar.

In-Person Judge Protest Day hosted by American Yacht Club

Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
This is an in-person Protest Day at American Yacht Club. This Protest Day is for people who have completed at least the Club Judge Seminar or have some experience holding hearings. You will role play and hear hearings under the supervision of experienced judges.
This Protest Day is intended for currently certified judges who wish to sharpen their hearing skills through mock protest and redress hearings with coaching by highly experienced Judge Instructors. Protest Day is not suitable for those with little or no experience with hearings.
Protest Day cases are fast moving, and it is suggested that participants bring a laptop or other device where they can type their facts, conclusions and decisions as this expedites the process.
Upon completion each participant will earn 80 CEUs.
